Day of surgery
Surgery is done under local anesthesia and without pain. The new corneal layer is held in place by an air bubble alone, with no surgical stitches. You go home the same day.
First 3-5 days
Sleeping face-up for 3-5 days is what keeps the air bubble pressing the transplanted cornea into place, far shorter than the stitch period other transplant techniques need.
First weeks
Most patients notice a clear improvement in vision within the first few weeks, and go back to desk work in about a week.
3-6 months
Vision keeps improving gradually and reaches its best within 3-6 months, much faster than a full-thickness PKP transplant, which needs up to a full year.
