Why Dr. Shaarawy for keratoconus

International patient questions

How much do corneal ring segments (ICRS / Intacs) cost in Cairo?

ICRS in Cairo with Dr. Ahmed Shaarawy ranges from $600 to $1,200 per eye depending on the segment type (Intacs, Keraring, or Ferrara) and the number of rings required. Total bilateral cases run $1,200–$2,400. The combined ICRS + CXL package starts at $1,200 per eye. The same procedure runs $4,000–$5,500 per eye in London or Madrid — Egypt is roughly 70–80% cheaper without compromising on segment brand, femto-laser technology, or surgeon expertise.

What is the difference between Intacs, Keraring, and Ferrara Ring?

Intacs has a hexagonal cross-section and is the most widely used segment globally — best for early-to-moderate keratoconus. Keraring uses a triangular cross-section that produces a stronger flattening effect and offers more sizing flexibility, ideal for moderate-to-severe cones. Ferrara Ring has a flat profile primarily used to regularize the corneal surface in irregular astigmatism and Pellucid Marginal Degeneration (PMD). Dr. Shaarawy selects the segment based on your topography, pachymetry, and the cone's location.

Can ICRS be combined with corneal cross-linking (CXL)?

Yes — the combined ICRS + CXL protocol is the gold standard for progressive keratoconus. CXL halts the underlying disease while ring segments reshape the cornea and improve vision immediately. We perform both in the same session ($1,200–$1,800 per eye package) or staged a few weeks apart. Same-session is more economical and more convenient for international patients.

Am I a candidate for ICRS / Intacs?

ICRS is indicated for keratoconus (early and moderate stages), post-LASIK ectasia, and irregular astigmatism / Pellucid Marginal Degeneration. The cornea must be clear in the central optical zone (no dense scarring) with adequate thickness in the planned ring-tunnel zone — typically minimum 400 microns. Topography, pachymetry, and OCT determine final candidacy.

How long do I need to stay in Cairo as an international patient?

Most international ICRS patients only need 3–5 days in Cairo: pre-op exam day, surgery day, and the first post-op check the next morning. Femto-laser-assisted ring placement means rapid visual recovery — most patients see improvement within 1–2 weeks. Follow-up is then handled by your local ophthalmologist using our detailed protocol; we'll see you again at the 1-month and 3-month checkpoints if travel allows.

Are corneal ring segments permanent? Can they be removed later?

ICRS is designed to remain permanently in the corneal stroma. Critically, however, the segments are removable and exchangeable if the keratoconus progresses or your refraction changes — a unique advantage that keeps your future surgical options open, including subsequent corneal transplantation if ever needed (which is rare with combined ICRS + CXL).

What is the deposit and is it refundable?

A $200 deposit secures your surgery date and is deducted from the total cost. It is fully refundable up to 7 days before the scheduled surgery. Late cancellations forfeit a portion to cover OR-room booking and the segment ordered specifically for your case (rings are sized per patient based on topography).

What is included in the price?

Surgeon fee, OR fee, femto-laser tunnel creation, ring segments (Intacs / Keraring / Ferrara — your selected brand), topical anesthesia, post-op medications during the in-clinic window, and 6 months of follow-up consultations. Hotel, flights, and visa support for international patients are quoted separately during the planning call.
