Cairo vs Spain vs France vs Turkey

Spain leads keratopigmentation globally — Cairo delivers the same femto-assisted technique at ~50% of the cost.

A cornea specialist for a cornea procedure

Keratopigmentation is microsurgery on the cornea — the same tissue Dr. Shaarawy operates on every day in DMEK, DSAEK, DALK, and PKP transplants. His daily femtosecond-laser experience translates directly into the precision needed for cosmetic iris pigmentation. He was personally trained at Devers Eye Institute in Portland, Oregon, and has published in the American Academy of Ophthalmology archives.

Frequently asked questions

How much does corneal tattooing cost in Cairo in 2026?

Cairo prices range from $800 (manual tattoo for small scar coverage) to $3,500 (full cosmetic iris keratopigmentation with mineral pigments). Femto-assisted falls between $1,500–$2,500. Each price includes the surgeon, OR fee, medical-grade pigments, topical anesthesia, and 6 months of follow-up. Use the calculator above for a personalized estimate.

What's the difference between manual and femto-assisted corneal tattooing?

Manual tattooing uses a fine needle to deposit dye in the superficial corneal stroma — best for small scars, lower cost ($800–$1,200), but limited depth control. Femto-assisted uses a femtosecond laser to create a precise stromal pocket where the dye is then injected — better depth control, longer color stability (10+ years), and the technique of choice for cosmetic iris pigmentation. Cost is $1,500–$2,500.

Is keratopigmentation permanent? Will the color fade?

Modern medical-grade mineral pigments are designed to be permanent. About 10–15% of patients see slight fading over 5–10 years — most often with manual tattooing in sun-exposed climates. Femto-assisted keratopigmentation with mineral pigments is the most stable option. Touch-up sessions, if needed, cost significantly less than the original procedure. Dr. Shaarawy will discuss longevity expectations honestly during your consultation.

Cosmetic vs reconstructive — what's the difference?

Reconstructive use covers white corneal scars (leukomas) from old ulcers or trauma, or recolors a damaged iris after prior surgery. Purely cosmetic use changes the natural eye color (e.g. brown to blue or green) — this requires mineral pigments and a more demanding technique, and is only offered to adults 18+ with no active corneal disease, no severe dry eye, and no autoimmune ocular conditions.

Who is a good candidate?

Adults 18+ with a stable cornea, no active inflammation, no severe dry eye, and no autoimmune disease affecting the eye. Scar patients need a stable scar for at least 6 months. Aniridia patients (full or partial iris absence) are excellent candidates. Every case requires an in-person assessment — we don't perform the procedure without a clinical exam.

Why is keratopigmentation so much cheaper in Cairo than Madrid or Paris?

Lower clinic operating and staff costs in Egypt — not lower clinical standards. We use the same imported medical-grade mineral pigments and the same femtosecond-laser-assisted technique used in the few European centers offering this procedure. Spain is the global leader in cosmetic keratopigmentation (Madrid centers charge €5,000–€8,000) — Cairo achieves comparable outcomes at ~50% of that cost.

What's the recovery and post-op care like?

First 7 days: antibiotic + steroid drops. UV-protective sunglasses are mandatory for 30 days (UV exposure can accelerate pigment fading). Avoid swimming and eye makeup for 14 days. Recovery is fast — most patients return to work in 5–7 days. Final color settles 4–6 weeks post-op once the pigment fully integrates with the corneal stroma.

How long do I need to stay in Cairo, and what's the medical tourism package?

Plan on 5–7 days minimum: outpatient procedure (60–90 min), then post-op checks on day 1, day 3, and day 5–7. Medical tourism package: surgery + 5–7 nights at a clinic-area hotel + airport transfers + visa support letter. Total typically $2,500–$5,500 depending on technique and hotel. European patients save 50%+ vs Madrid or Paris.
