What's the difference between manual tattooing and deep keratopigmentation?
Manual tattooing uses a fine needle to deposit dye in the superficial corneal stroma, best for small scars, lower cost ($800-$1,200), but limited depth control. Deep keratopigmentation places micronized mineral pigment further into the stroma, which gives better depth control and longer color stability (10+ years). Cost is $1,500-$2,500.
Is keratopigmentation permanent? Will the color fade?
Modern medical-grade mineral pigments are designed to be permanent. A minority of patients see slight fading over 5-10 years, most often with manual tattooing in sun-exposed climates. Deep keratopigmentation with mineral pigments is the most stable option. Touch-up sessions, if needed, cost significantly less than the original procedure. Cosmetic vs reconstructive: what's the difference?
Reconstructive use is the only use we offer: covering white corneal scars (leukomas) from old ulcers or trauma, and improving the appearance of a non-seeing eye. Changing the natural eye color for purely cosmetic reasons (e.g. brown to blue or green) is something we do not perform at all, neither by corneal tattoo nor by colored artificial iris implant.
Who is a good candidate?
Adults 18+ with a stable cornea, no active inflammation, no severe dry eye, and no autoimmune disease affecting the eye. Scar patients need a stable scar for at least 6 months. Aniridia patients (full or partial iris absence) are excellent candidates. Every case requires an in-person assessment. We don't perform the procedure without a clinical exam.
Why is keratopigmentation so much cheaper in Cairo than Madrid or Paris?
Lower clinic operating and staff costs in Egypt, not lower clinical standards. We use the same imported medical-grade mineral pigments and the same technique used in the few European centers offering this procedure. Madrid centers charge €5,000-€8,000 for comparable reconstructive keratopigmentation, Cairo achieves comparable outcomes at ~50% of that cost.
What's the recovery and post-op care like?
First 7 days: antibiotic + steroid drops. UV-protective sunglasses are mandatory for 30 days (UV exposure can accelerate pigment fading). Avoid swimming and eye makeup for 14 days. Recovery is fast, most patients return to work in 5-7 days. Final color settles 4-6 weeks post-op once the pigment fully integrates with the corneal stroma.
