Blurred Vision After LASIK: Causes and What's Normal

Blurred vision is a very common complaint, with many possible causes. It is generally a sign of an underlying issue in the eye — which may involve the cornea, the optic nerve, or other parts of the visual system. The blur reduces clarity and often makes a patient blink frequently or rub the eye in an attempt to see better.
This article walks through the most common causes of blurred vision, whether blurred vision after LASIK should be a concern, and how it can be treated.
Causes of Blurred Vision
Blurred vision is a sign that something in the eye isn't working as it should. The underlying cause can range from a simple refractive error easily corrected with glasses to a condition that requires urgent surgical treatment. The most common causes include:
Refractive Errors
One of the leading causes of blurred vision is an uncorrected refractive error: myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), or astigmatism.
Myopia (Nearsightedness)
Myopia is one of the most common refractive errors. It causes blurry distance vision and can be corrected in several ways: glasses, contact lenses, or refractive laser surgery such as LASIK.
Hyperopia (Farsightedness)
Hyperopia is another cause of blurred vision. It typically affects near focus first — close objects appear blurry while distant objects remain relatively clear.
However, with higher degrees of hyperopia, distance vision can also become blurred.
Hyperopia can be managed with the same options used for myopia: glasses, contact lenses, or LASIK refractive surgery.
Astigmatism
Astigmatism is a refractive error that also causes blurred vision. It results from an irregular corneal shape that prevents light from focusing on a single point on the retina, leading to distorted or blurred images.
Eye Diseases
Cataracts
A cataract can be a cause of blurred vision, halos around lights at night, and other symptoms that reduce visual clarity.
Cataract surgery has become one of the safest and most routine procedures performed today. At Cornea Clinic, Dr. Shaarawy uses the latest technologies for cataract surgery, including femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery and standard phacoemulsification (phaco).
Chronic Dry Eye
Persistent dry eye disease can affect vision and is a common cause of intermittent blurring. Artificial tear drops can be effective in mild cases and reduce the severity of dryness.
Other eye conditions that can cause blurred vision include:
- Glaucoma
- Vitreous floaters
Systemic Health Conditions
Some systemic medical conditions can directly affect vision quality. Examples include:
Diabetic Retinopathy
If a patient with diabetes develops sudden or unexplained blurred vision, they should see an ophthalmologist immediately, as this can be a sign of diabetic retinopathy — a sight-threatening retinal condition.
Other systemic conditions that may cause blurred vision include:
- Cardiovascular disease
- Stroke
- Cerebral hemorrhage
- Ocular migraine or migraine in general
- Presbyopia (age-related loss of near focus)
Other Contributing Factors
Some additional factors can contribute to blurred vision, including:
- Pregnancy
- Excessive contact lens wear
- Certain medications or eye drops
Blurred Vision After LASIK
Blurred vision is one of many symptoms that may suggest an issue with how the eye is functioning. It can also occur in the early period after eye surgery — including after LASIK for refractive correction. So why does this happen after LASIK?
Why Blurred Vision Can Occur After LASIK
Some patients experience blurred vision after LASIK or other eye surgeries. This typically improves within a few days, although it can take several weeks for vision to fully stabilize.
Is Blurred Vision After LASIK Dangerous?
Ophthalmologists agree that some blurring after LASIK is normal — it is expected for vision not to be sharp immediately after the procedure.
Blurred vision after LASIK is generally not dangerous. It usually lasts only a few days post-op, and your surgeon will typically prescribe lubricating drops during this period.
Is Blurred Vision the Only Symptom After LASIK?
As mentioned above, LASIK can produce a number of short-term symptoms, of which blurring is just one. Others include:
- Dry eye
- Blurred vision with halos around lights
- Eye discomfort or mild pain
- Redness
- Mild swelling for a few hours after surgery
To support healing, the following are generally recommended after LASIK:
- Wear sunglasses to reduce light sensitivity
- Get adequate rest and sleep
- Use the eye drops and analgesics prescribed by your surgeon
- Avoid strenuous physical activity in the immediate post-op period
- Avoid rubbing the eyes
If you notice persistent visual disturbance or blurred vision after LASIK — or new-onset blurred vision unrelated to surgery — book an appointment with Dr. Shaarawy as soon as possible to assess the eye.
