What Are Corneal Rings?
Intracorneal ring segments (ICRS), sold under names like Intacs and Ferrara Rings, are tiny, transparent plastic arcs implanted within the corneal stroma. Their job is simple: reshape the cornea's curvature and pull back the conical distortion of keratoconus.
How Do the Rings Work?
The rings redistribute pressure across the cornea more evenly, flattening the cone and reducing irregular astigmatism. For many patients that means sharper vision and less dependence on contact lenses.
Who Benefits From Rings?
The typical candidate is a moderate case, someone who has outgrown glasses but hasn't yet reached the transplant stage. Rings can postpone the need for transplantation and improve the quality of vision with contact lenses, or sometimes without them.
Combining Cross-Linking and Rings
Surgeons frequently pair the two procedures: rings to reshape the cornea, cross-linking to halt progression. Which comes first depends on the surgeon's evaluation of each case.
Are Rings Removable?
Yes, and this is an important advantage over corneal transplantation. If the rings don't deliver the expected outcome, or the condition progresses later, they can be removed or replaced.
