LASIK Surgery in Egypt: From a Cornea Surgeon Who Sees the Full Picture

The Difference Between Traditional LASIK, Femto-LASIK, and SMILE
This is the question I get asked most in clinic. The core difference is how the corneal surface is handled:
1. Traditional LASIK
Uses a mechanical device (a microkeratome) to cut a thin flap in the corneal surface. The technique has proven itself over decades, but flap thickness is less precise than with a laser.
2. Femto-LASIK
Same concept, but the flap is created with a femtosecond laser instead of a blade. It gives me finer control over the flap's thickness and diameter, and puts less pressure on the eyeball. It's my preferred option for most cases.
3. SMILE
No flap is created at all. The laser shapes a small disc of tissue (a lenticule) inside the cornea, which is removed through a tiny opening. Are You a Candidate for LASIK?
Not every eye is suitable. My initial exam takes an hour to an hour and a half and covers a complete evaluation.
Basic Requirements
- Age: Over 18, ideally 21+, with your prescription stable for at least a year.
- Corneal thickness: Must be above a safe threshold — determined during the exam.
- No keratoconus: This is an absolute contraindication for LASIK. Topography detects it even at an early stage.
- Healthy retina: Any issues need to be treated first.
- No severe dry eye: Dryness tends to worsen after surgery.
Cases That Are Excluded
- Keratoconus or corneal ectasia
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Uncontrolled autoimmune disease
- Certain acne medications (isotretinoin)
- Severe, untreated dry eye
If you're excluded from LASIK, that's not the end of the road. I might recommend PRK or ICL lenses (costing EGP 40,000-60,000 per eye, but excellent for high prescriptions).

Takes one to two hours and includes:

The Risks — The Full Picture
