Corneal Rings (Intacs/ICRS): Complete Patient Guide — When and What to Expect

What Are Corneal Rings?
Intracorneal Ring Segments (ICRS), commercially known as Intacs or Ferrara Rings, are very small, transparent plastic segments implanted within the corneal stroma to reshape its curvature and reduce the conical distortion.
How Do the Rings Work?
The rings redistribute corneal pressure more evenly — flattening the cone and reducing irregular astigmatism. The result: improved visual acuity and reduced dependence on contact lenses in many cases.
Who Benefits From Rings?
Moderate cases that have outgrown glasses but haven't yet reached the transplant stage. Rings postpone the need for transplantation and improve vision quality with contact lenses — or sometimes without them.
Combining Cross-Linking and Rings
Surgeons frequently combine the two procedures: rings to reshape and CXL to halt progression. The order depends on the surgeon's evaluation of each case.
Are Rings Removable?
Yes — an important advantage that distinguishes them from corneal transplantation. They can be removed or replaced if they don't deliver the expected outcome or if the condition progresses later.
